A Artista
------------
Catharina Suleiman (Brazil, São Paulo, 1977)
With a trajectory shaped by early experiences of overexposure, itinerancy, and motherhood, Catharina grew up between the backcountry and the city, in a family composed mostly of women. Between the ages of 10 and 16, she worked as a model, living across Asia, Europe, and Brazil. She became a mother during her adolescence and raised her daughter as a single parent during her youth, a period she dedicated to supporting and raising her child while immigrating for another seven years between North and South America where she worked in various fields.
Her artistic career began after the age of 30, when she was able to dedicate herself to technical training. She studied historical photography and alternative processes at Central Saint Martins in London, and graphic processes at the Taller Experimental in Havana, and holds several specializations that ground a multidisciplinary practice spanning photography, sculpture, printmaking, painting, textiles, performance, poetry, natural materials, and traditional feminine manual crafts. In her work, theoretical research and creative execution are never separated from the physical experience of the body.
The artist's research is driven by a deep investigation into the poetic, historical, and political common anatomy shared by women and nature. In this realm, when the distinction between culture and nature was established, the essential and political body of the woman was colonized and confined to private spaces, while the Earth simultaneously underwent a historical process of domination. Woman and nature are equally exploited to their very last resources, showing that they are not separate entities, but parts of an inseparable whole.
Catharina articulates this research in an individual and fluid manner, sometimes focusing on the woman, sometimes on nature, to then reunite them into a single composition where separation is erased and silencing is transformed into a tremor of the earth or the body. It is within this tremor that she generates movement, revealing how life inside these animal and vegetable bodies insists on breaking through structures and pulse in cycles of strength, autonomy, and continuity.
Cited by the Wall Street International as a “thought-provoking” work, the artist has pieces in the UNESCO Latin American collection, the Oscar Niemeyer Museum (MON), and the MAC RS, among others.
Since 2013, she has also dedicated herself to creating urban art and installations, with works exhibited in venues such as the Tomie Ohtake Institute, CCSP, MIS, CCBB and the Memorial da América Latina.
In 2023, she was one of the featured artists at Expo da Paulista, the largest open-air exhibition in Latin America. Her work has been exhibited in more than 15 countries.
